JAVANESE SCRIPT CONJUCT FORMS (PASANGAN AKSARA JAWA)

Javanese Script Conjunct Forms (Pasangan Aksara Jawa)

Pasangan are special forms of Javanese script (Aksara Jawa) used to represent the second consonant in a consonant cluster or to indicate that a consonant is not followed by an inherent vowel. In other words, pasangan are subscript forms of the basic Javanese characters that allow writing syllables without an intervening vowel sound.

Purpose of Pasangan

In Javanese writing, each consonant (aksara nglegena) typically includes an inherent vowel /a/. For example:

  • The character (ka) is pronounced "ka", not just "k".

To remove this vowel (so that it can be followed directly by another consonant), a pasangan form is used:

  • ꦏ꧀ꦛ (ka + pasangan of tha) = "ktha" (not "katha")

Types of Pasangan in Aksara Jawa

There are two major categories of pasangan:

1. Basic Pasangan

These are derived from the basic syllabic letters (aksara nglegena). Each consonant has a pasangan form which is used after another consonant to eliminate the inherent vowel.

Examples:

  • (ka) → Pasangan: ꧀ꦏ

  • (da) → Pasangan: ꧀ꦢ

  • (sa) → Pasangan: ꧀ꦱ

These pasangan are placed below or attached to the previous syllable.

2. Special Pasangan

These have unique forms and positions. There are three main types:

a. Above-line Pasangan

These are placed above the previous syllable (unusual in most Brahmic scripts).

Examples:

  • (tha) → Pasangan appears above the preceding character.

b. Right-side Pasangan

Used for characters that cannot fit below or are aesthetically arranged beside the main character.

Example:

  • (nga) in some contexts.

c. Dual Pasangan

Some characters, especially ra, ya, la, and wa, can have two pasangan forms depending on their position and the writing tradition.

Rules of Usage

  1. Pasangan must be used to suppress the vowel sound that would normally follow a consonant.

  2. Pasangan cannot stand alone; it always follows a full consonant.

  3. Pasangan cannot begin a word, because it modifies the preceding consonant.

  4. Sandhangan (vowel diacritics) can still be used along with pasangan to add clarity.

Examples of Words with Pasangan

  1. ꦩꦤ꧀ꦛꦶ (manthi)

    • ma + na + pasangan tha + vowel marker i

    • Result: "manthi"

  2. ꦏꦸꦛ꧀ꦭꦺ (kuthlé)

    • ku + tha + pasangan la + é

    • Result: "kuthlé"
