CARAKAN (AKSARA/HURUF)
Carakan in Javanese Script
Carakan is the general term for the traditional Javanese script used to write the Javanese language, and by extension, other regional languages such as Sundanese, Madurese, and even old forms of Bahasa Indonesia. It belongs to the Brahmic script family, which also includes Devanagari (used in Hindi), Thai, and Balinese scripts.
1. Meaning of Carakan
The word Carakan refers to the basic syllabic letters of the Javanese script, which are used to represent consonant-vowel combinations. Each character inherently contains the vowel /a/ or /ɔ/ (depending on dialect).
Example:
-
ꦏ (ka) is read "ka", not just "k".
-
ꦢ (da) is read "da".
These basic letters are called "Aksara Nglegena" or "Carakan letters".
